Under the emblematic title "Homeopathy Timeless Quality", the 64th LMHI Congress will be held at Warsaw, Poland, from 26th to 30th August 2009. The Congress is organized by the Polish Homeopathy Society, founded in 1892.

In order to offer our on-line community and visitors some news about homeopathy in the Congress hosting country and its homeopaths, we interview Tomasz Kokoszczynski MD, Poland LMHI Vice-president.

from Rinaldo Octavio Vargas
Dear doctor Kokoszczynski, homeopathy has been strongly supported in Eastern European countries in recent years. This is one of the reasons the LIGA has decided to hold its next congress in Poland. Would you like to explain to our community & visitors what the situation is in Poland regarding homeopathy?

Homeopathy in Poland has a long tradition. The first comprehensive Materia Medica in Polish language was published in 1876 by Antoni Kaczkowski and the first homeopathic hospital was grounded in Poland in 1830. The Polish Homeopathic Association which organizes the congress was founded in year 1892 (so is older than LMHI itself) in Warsaw. But in the meantime two wars affected Poland. After first World War homeopathy redevelopped easily in free Poland (you must remember that before this war after three partitions Poland ceased from the world map – but never from the hearts of Polish people). After second World War under the communist rule the situation of homeopathy was more difficult. It was tolerated but could not develop its full potential. Although the Polish Homeopathic Association was re-registered in Warsaw in 1946 and after that started also a pharmacy with homeopathic remedies but till the year 1978 there were no regular courses in homeopathy. From that year, the great Nestor of Polish Homeopathy dr. Jerzy Łozowski, who started his education in homeopathy from German homeopaths at his late 60ties decided to teach homeopathy to a group of doctors. And from that time Polish homeopathy started to grow. With regular courses lead by the successors of doctor Łozowski in Poznań, with many seminars of prominent homeopaths from all over the world, with several regional Homeopathic Associations and a native Homeopathic Laboratory more and more doctors were attracted to it. But all this evoked discontent and counteraction from the academic doctors. They depreciated homeopathy in medical and popular press, especially after the infamous meta-analysis in Lancet 2005, which, as we know it today, was conducted with serious biases. The culminating point was the statement against homeopathy as part of medical profession adopted by the Polish Supreme Medical Council on 4 April 2008. The document is the effect of long term opposition against homeopathy in some medical circles, which is to sense all over the world. And this is paradoxically good that finally such a letter was written and adopted, because it has activated people and will help us to clear the situation of homeopathy in Poland and integrate our homeopathic community. We have developped some counteractions, and an excellent occasion for confirming, not only Polish homeopathy would be the next year Liga Congress in Warsaw 2009. But of course the success of the Congress depends on participants, depends on you. I know it is difficult to spend extra money for this in time of crisis, but this is a personal decision and contribution of each homeopath to the situation of homeopathy in today's world. Today this is a Statement in Poland, tomorrow – a Resolution against homeopathy might be adopted in your country. We do not give up, and I promise that the 64th LMHI Congress in Warsaw would be some kind of special and very interesting – we could not reveal all the details at the moment. Remember that the successful Solidarity movement against the supremacy of communism arouse in Poland – now is your personal turn to show your solidarity with homeopathy. I am sure that we all do build the history nowadays – especially the history of homeopathy.

Dr. Tomasz Kokoszczynski, some experts have expressed their concerns regarding the way in which a sort of simplified homeopathy grows. What do you think about this direction homeopathy has taken?

Looking for shortcuts is a part of human nature, but we should be careful with that. In The Merchant of Venice Shakespeare teaches us "All that glitters is not gold"– not every simplification (as not every complication) is as good as it seems. The first thing is what we should do. It is to better understand what we are doing with homeopathy. What really is homeo-pathy? We should remember, accordingly to § 63 of Organon, that this is our body, which performs the whole job of cure. The remedy is only a teacher which shows us the way. People are used that medicines (chemicals) will make the job for them – instead of them. Of course this could be done for a while (medicines need repeating), but transferring this idea to homeopathy could mislead in choosing remedies. Also many homeopaths forgot that there is a job to do and are looking for shortcuts in the treatment, chasing for lack of symptoms, avoiding aggravations. Fast change is only a change, and what we need is a deep transformation and this is not possible with simplified homeopathy. But the other side is that classical homeopathy become more and more complicated with its huge amount of remedies and symptoms. Using repertory and even computerized repertorisation inclines to the mechanical finding of a remedy, Materia Medica distracts our attention from details, and there is no ideal match with Similimum. Perhaps there is another way and we should redefine the Similimum itself... One thing is sure – only a deeper understanding of homeopathy could help. Aude Sapere!

Dr. Tomasz Kokoszczynski, we've learnt you have written recently an article you've titled "Medicine & Health", about the "way medicine fights symptoms, homeopathy and its ideas". Quite interesting subject and association: "homeopathy & health". MDs mostly, even homeopaths, tend to associate medicine with illness! How do you explain your association of medicine with health?

This is the point which is very important in our homeopathic journey. For ages people fight with diseases. If somebody suffers pain he will look for relieve. So no wonder that Hahnemann writes in § 2 about "permanent restoration of the health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent". But this should be only a start point for building up health not only restoring it. For that we have to understand that health is not only the lack of disease, lack of symptoms. But what is health? In medicine a disease is supposed to come from the outside world, attacks us – so we have to fight and defend. This is of course true in large extent in acute diseases, but medicine expands it also to the chronic cases. The same states Hahnemann in §72 "these are termed chronic diseases. They are caused by dynamic infection with a chronic miasm." And it does not even matter how we understand miasm – an infection is an infection – from the outside word. So as a consequence, fighting a disease would restore health. But this does not agree with my observations. Even when there is a lack of pathological symptoms, people suffer because they misinterpret the outside world. For example if somebody is afraid, that people will have bad opinion about him, his blood pressure could rise, he could be unhappy because of this. So solution seems easy – let us look for example to the rubric:
MIND - FEAR - opinion of others, of : nux-v puls.
MIND - DELUSIONS - criticized, she is : bar-c cocain hydrog hyos ign laur lyss marb-w pall plb rhus-r staph.
MIND - SENSITIVE - opinion of others; to the : stann staph.
MIND - DELUSIONS - laughed at and mocked at; being : BAR-C ign lach nux-v ph-ac sep.
or any similar
find out some of his constitutional traits and let give him a correct remedy. And sometimes it works. People change and are happy. But we should be careful... you know who has no problem at all with opinion of others? Who feels no fear and is not afraid? Psychopaths! You could read about them in the book written by Robert D. Hare, PhD. expert from that field: "Without Conscience. The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us" 1993. Do you think psychopaths are healthy? They feel never guilty, commit most crime, life with them could be like a nightmare, you will find many of them administrating your money in banks – how it ends we could experience it lately. Their problem is that they do not feel fear, that they do not feel empathy. They do not feel! And what it has to do with homeopathy? With health? The remedy should not diminish your fear – it should help you to feel yourself, your situation and to see that to gain a good opinion you have to be a good man, find job which satisfies you, live with people in good community, be honest and then you start not to be afraid of people and not only do not feel fear. These are two totally different things! Which remedy changes only your feeling of fear and which one helps you to transform it? Health is constant and harmonious development, transforming yourself into one (without inner contradictions). In my text I wanted to show that contemporary medicine has in reality not much to do with health. It does not help in transformation – it only manipulates (changes) your feelings and symptoms. It is like credit from the bank (in this case from the bank of nature) – you get money, you have it, but then you have to give it back. Medicine cures, but not heals, what could clearly be seen as one gets older and homeopaths should be careful not to go the same way, not to look for such shortcuts.

So you go on associating homeopathy with health. Since it could strike the non homeopathic visitors of this web site, could you, please, explain to them the idea of "a remedy being consistent with health"?

As I have said – remedies could help you in transformation. We should look for remedies which intensifies the current states of the body and mind – helping one to see himself, and promote him to act with it. So we should look for remedies which give us an homeopathic aggravation (old symptoms coming back) and this aggravation (gentler with the time and taken remedies) in my opinion is an unavoidable part of the deep treatment, because only intensifying one's state could make him to see/feel it and work it over. Our real problem is that we do not see ourselves – we are deep sunken in self deception. This is shown by a wonderful book by Daniel Goleman, Ph.D.: "Vital lies, simple truths" 1985 – and also a newer one "Mistakes were made (but not by me)" by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson 2007. Every homeopath should read them and think about it. And what it has to do with infection? Really to say I do not know. For me – nothing. Because the real cause of chronic diseases lies deep in us and is called self-deception (not feeling something in us) and comes from inside of us. Properly used homeopathic remedies, intensifying our states help us to see ourselves on each level and help us to overcome it. The problem with chronic symptoms is that body (and mind) could not see what it causes them by itself. When you could not see anything – you could not react on it. And the remedy, as a "teacher" helps you to realize this.
And even Hahnemann has observed that we could help "healthy proovers" to gain more health:
"Experience shows (...), that the organism of the prover becomes, by these frequent attacks on his health, all the more expert in repelling all external influences inimical to his frame and all artificial and natural morbific noxious agents, and becomes more hardened to resist everything of an injurious character, by means of these moderate experiments on his own person with medicines. His health becomes more unalterable; he becomes more robust, as all experience shows." (§141).
But it seems that he draw no conclusion from that, although of course he profited from it by himself. Should we be so scanty in prescribing our remedies in spite of what experience and life of our Master shows to us? Should we only wait for symptoms of a disease to fight with them and not help a person in his/her harmonious development? Should we only restore health or maybe help to create it? Would it be no better for homeopathy to help the human being develop its full potential?
This is what I call Salutogenetic approach (toward health), and not only Pathogenetic (against a disease) and it shows clearly the difference between homeopathy and academic medicine.

Dr. Tomasz Kokoszczynski, what do you think about the tendency of looking for new remedies in homeopathy?

We should keep proportion between the remedies and I think this is difficult and not balanced at the moment. We have many remedies which are overestimated – like from my experience Sulphur is and also many underestimated. Of course some new and very important remedies will be discovered but we should not put so much faith on them and better and more intense use what we already have. We can rediscover some of them - for example from my experience Zizia (in potency C200 or C1000) is a wonderful remedy for skin-burns from sun and from heats. When you apply it intensively enough it works like a miracle (be not afraid when it will develop a shadow of aggravation at first moment). I see from my experience, that still underestimated remedy is Tuberculinum. Given in high potencies often in stressful situation could help to resolve step by step basic fears deep seated in each of us. How I use it and with what effects – this is what I will tell during the next 64th LMHI Congress in Warsaw to which you and all your readers are cordially invited.

Thank you very much and let us know Homeopathy in Poland News when you have issues you want to be them promoted.
Thank you!

Who is Tomasz Kokoszczynski

He is busy with homeopathy in his own practice for ten years, now. After medical study, medical internship and specialization, period of time in which he simultaneously taught students basics of genetics in Department of Biology at Nicolaus Copernicus University, he found himself disappointed with what medicine can offer to the patients. Especially painful for him was the neglect of psychical side of human being. So he gave up medicine... for some years. In the meantime he worked shortly, as an editor-in-chief, for a computer magazine he has created previously, at the end of his study. But this was not enough to find out himself and he did not hesitate when he gets a chance to work at the Institute of Psychology in Psychophysiology Department at Kazimierz Wielki University, in Bydgoszcz, where he taught students basics of psychophysiology and participated in Neuroscience research. At this time his friend introduced him into realm of homeopathy. After first moment of skepticism it showed to be his passion. He has made regular A-F courses (in German way) at Great Poland Homeopathic Physicians' and Pharmacist' Association in Poznan and after that LFHom at British Faculty (also in Poland). He started at that time his web page for polish homeopathy and homeopathic internet discussion group. During the first years of his adventure with homeopathy he was keen on homeopathic constitution – looking for constitutional remedies for his patients and for himself. This journey, through many seminars and laborious repertorisations and Materia Medica readings, lead him to Homöopathie Aktuell competition: „Homöopathische Arznei in der Praxis" where he gets an award for the article: "Medice, cura te ipsum". This was for him a turning point. He has realized that, perhaps everybody has a constitution, but there are more homeopathic remedies for each person, which can help to build up his or her health. From that time, he started, step by step, to apply homeopathy using more remedies and more often administered. With time comes experience and more understanding and better control of the processes of homeopathic treatment. Homeopathy gains for him new shine, now. Tomasz Kokoszczynski is the current LMHI Poland Vice-president.
